Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Doing BADLY! So, I want you to make more mistakes in 2021 – a New Year’s Special “Coffee with Colm “

You’ve heard it said, “Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well” and it is. But anything worth doing usually takes time to get right, to get to the point where it is done well – and therefore a Universal Law suggests it must start off badly first.

So this week, over coffee, I’d like to explain why I am wishing you make mistakes, fail early and often to get the most out of 2021.

For some I may even be giving words to why stuff has not worked out for them before now.

It’s time.

Ladies and gentlemen, I invite you stick on the kettle, grab a coffee, and think with me for five minutes in your preferred way as we head into 2021 together.

Yours Truly: Hello there and welcome to another Coffee of Colm. Thank you for joining me and very happy New Year to you and yours as we enter 2021. My goodness, wasn’t 2020 a year to forget? Except we never will forget it because it will be etched in our memories forever. We will be talking to our great grandchildren about 2020. It will be taught in our history books. Please God  it will be be taught in our history books because it will in fact be over and COVID-19 will be relegated to a thing of the past.

But look, 2020 has been what it has been. And I’ve got two questions for you as we enter 2021.

  1. Number one, what are you taking with you from COVID? What blessing came to you because of COVID?What blessing came to you because of COVID? I’m a hundred percent sure that if you dig deep enough, you’ll have found something in 2020 that you’re not going to let go of willingly in 2021. And I urge you, if you found something that you’re not going to let go of willingly, that you don’t let go of it at all., That you, in fact, build it in to your life going forward, because it was obviously missing for you. And you’ve now found it or re-found it. Hang on to it.
  2. And the second question I want to pose for you as we start 2021 is, what mistakes are you planning to make in 2021?And you’re heard me right. What mistakes are you planning to make in 2021? You’re going to make mistakes anyway. That’s for sure. But the question I’m posing is what mistakes are you planning to make in 2021? What is it that you’ve always wanted to do, always wanted to do, hankering to do forever, but you’ve never found the time or you’ve never found the motivation or you’ve never felt good enough to do it? I’m proposing to you that you need to start. You need to start. It’s not going to be perfect.

Complete the following sentence; “Anything worth doing is worth doing… I’m sure you said, ‘well’ – anything worth doing is worth doing well,” but that’s not how you start. Anything worth doing is worth doing BADLY.

I’ll say that again. Anything worth doing is worth doing badly. Anything worth doing well in time is worth doing badly now. And if you don’t do it badly now, it will never be done well in the future. So I’m proposing to you in 2021, that whatever it is you’ve been putting off, stop putting it off for God’s sake.

This too will end. Your life will end. My life will end. Hopefully, please God, not for many, many years to come. But at some point, this race, this thing, life will be over. You don’t want to be sitting on your 80th birthday or your 90th birthday, looking back and regretting not having tried something in case it wasn’t perfect. I’m telling you now, it’s not going to be perfect. You want to write that book? Start. Is it going to be a best seller? probably not. Probably not, but maybe your third one or your 33rd one will be a best seller.

Point is, you’ve got to start. You want to write that song? Start. You want to learn to sing? Start. You want to save money? Start. You want to get fit? Start. You want to start a YouTube channel? Start it. You want to write a blog? Write it. Don’t worry about perfection. Perfection is never a goal. Perfection is impossible. Perfection is never a goal, but excellence is a goal. So anything worth doing is worth doing badly to begin with. And then over time, if you stick with it, you’ll be doing it well. Anything worth doing is worth doing badly.

So what mistakes are you planning to make in 2021? And by planning to make a mistake, I’m proposing that whatever it is you’ve been putting off, start and make a mistake.

How did you learn to walk? You got up one more time than you fell down. You have everything at your disposal to do whatever it is you want to do as long as you remember that principle. You got up one more time than you fell down, and that’s how you learned to walk. That’s how you’re going to write your book. It’s how you’re going to make your movie. That’s how you’re going to launch your YouTube channel or your product range or your new business. I have no idea what it is you want to do; only you know that. What I’m proposing to you, that anything worth doing is worth doing badly until you learn to do it well.

My mother, 82, hail and hearty, thank goodness as I record this, always said, “He (or she) who never made a mistake, made nothing.” He or she who never made a mistake, made nothing. So if I can wish you anything for 2021, apart from health and happiness, I wish that you start. I wish that you make mistakes. I wish that you adopt the mantra that anything worth doing is worth doing badly and simply start. I wish that you fail. I wish that you fail early. I wish that you fail often. I wish that you fail forward. And I wish that in failing forward, that you get up one more time when life knocks you down in 2021. And if you do that, if we both do that, well then this time next year, we’ll be sitting here in a very different place.

Anything worth doing is worth doing badly.

Just start.

Thank you for joining for this week’s Coffee with Colm. I hope and trust is ever you got something from it. Please consider what’s been shared here today and apply it into your thinking for this next week and then very importantly, come back next week and we’ll share another coffee together and I’ll ruminate on some other aspect of life and business.

Between now and then, get some great coffee, get some fresh air, get some R & R. If you spend too much time alone, I recommend you get online and meet some people. If you spend too much time online with people, I recommend you take some time out and spend some time alone and get to know yourself a little bit better. And then when the time is right – and only when the time is right – get your head back in the game, get organized for the week ahead, get stuck in, make next week count and I’ll see you here this time next week for another Coffee with Colm.

Sláinte.

I love great coffee.

Talk to you soon.

Bye for now.
